More than 20 murals can be found along the historic streets of downtown. Walk or drive to view the murals. A map of their locations can be found on line, at the Welcome Center or simply stop by one of the local businesses to pick one up. It’s fun to locate the murals, admire their artistry and read the story that is told by each one.

We drove around town to get oriented when we first arrived and couldn’t help but stop at several of the beautiful murals we spotted.

Palatka, FL Festivals and Fairs

Come celebrate Florida’s history and heritage during one of the many festivals and fairs hosted by the city each year. Palatka is home to the oldest festival in Florida, The Florida Azalea Festival, one of the largest festivals in the southeast. Held the first weekend of March each year, the festival has been held in the historic downtown area of Palatka for nearly 75 years. Enjoy an amazing variety of native and exotic plants, loads of kid-friendly activities, food and drink options as well as live entertainment. Ravine Gardens State Park joins in the celebrations each year with its Azalea Days. Ravine Gardens State Park

Ravine Gardens State Park has an abundance of azalea flowers, miles of hiking trails and two suspension bridges. A combination of formal and natural gardens, the 146-acre park is stunningly beautiful. Explore the winding pathways, steep stairways and suspension bridges found throughout the park. And, depending on the weather, the park will be in glorious color each February or March when the azaleas reach their full blooming peak. Riverfront Park is a beautiful and peaceful park located on the banks of the St. Johns River. The views and atmosphere here are beautiful. From the reviews I’ve read, it’s just a place to park your RV, and not much else. If that’s what you’re looking for it will work. Just don’t expect a nice RV park to hang out and enjoy the outdoors.

Biloxi, Mississippi is a small city located on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. The beachfront here lies directly on the Mississippi Sound (part of the Gulf of Mexico). Scattered off the coast of Biloxi and into the Gulf of Mexico are many barrier islands. The city of Gulfport is Biloxi’s close neighbor to the west, while bordered to the north and east by the city of D’Iberville. It is situated 62 miles west of Mobile, Alabama and 90 miles east of New Orleans, Louisiana. Fresh Gulf oysters, shrimp and fish are a daily specialty in Biloxi. We saw many shrimp boats like the blue one in the photo on the right throughout the waters surrounding Biloxi. Things to See & Do in Biloxi, Mississippi

Relax on the Beach – Fish From the Pier

With it’s soft, white sand beaches and calm waters, it’s easy to see why Biloxi has been a long time favorite vacation destination. Enjoy a quiet walk along the shores of the Mississippi Sound. It is also the perfect spot for relaxing on the beach, water sports and fishing from the pier. From April to October, the water temperature near the Biloxi beaches is between 71 and 85 degrees making these beaches family friendly and the perfect temperature for swimming.

There are dozens of miles of sandy shoreline here to enjoy. Some favorite beach areas are between Harrah’s and Hard Rock and just west of the Beau Rivage. Rent beach chairs, umbrellas, aqua cycles and wave runners from a beach shop which is open from late spring to early fall. Parking is free. Be sure to bring your own beverages and food as there are no food stands along the beach. The beaches of nearby Gulfport are also a popular destination. We played the slot machines for hours at each of the casinos during our five day vacation here. We won some and lost some but all in all we had fun. The free drinks offered while your playing really do add to the fun!

For special perks, we joined the Players Club in each casino resort that we visited. Members services in the casinos will explain how membership in their Players Club works. Most casinos will give you a certain dollar amount of credits added to your account after you have accumulated a certain number of points. Some will also give you a dollar amount in food credits to be used in one or more of their restaurants in this way too. Be sure to join, it’s fun to be rewarded while playing. And hopefully you’ll be a winner at whatever game you choose to play at the casinos! You’ll also find special drawings, half price lunch or dinner buffets, bonus points offered on certain games and other promotions offered by the casinos.

We picked up a copy of the Mississippi Gulf Coast’s Observer magazine at the Biloxi Visitor Center. Tour the Inside of the Biloxi Lighthouse

The Biloxi Lighthouse, standing 65’ tall, is an iconic and historic sight in the city of Biloxi. It is located in the center of US Highway 90 across the street from the Biloxi Visitor’s Center. It is the only lighthouse in the United States to stand in the middle of a US highway. It’s definitely a landmark that can’t be missed. Dating back to the mid-1800s it is made of cast iron and is one of the first of its kind in the region.

After surviving hurricane Katrina, the lighthouse was restored and opened to the public for tours in 2010. Inside the lighthouse, blue lines are painted on the wall to mark historic storm surge levels. The blue lines range from 14 feet to an incredible 21 feet marking the record level at which hurricane Katrina crested. Daily guided tours take place (weather permitting) between 9am and 9:30am.

Visit the Biloxi Visitors Center located across the street from the lighthouse. We found the staff here to be very friendly and helpful. They gave us information on guided tours of the lighthouse and other interesting things to see and do in the area. There are also exhibits and a short movie on the history of Biloxi which we found to be very interesting. Tons of brochures full of local information and a nice little gift shop. We picked up a copy of the Mississippi Gulf Coast’s Observer magazine here. It’s full of great information on things to see and do in the area.

Take the Walking Tour of Historic Downtown Biloxi

Stop #20 Colonial Revival style home the Redding House

The walking tour of historic downtown Biloxi begins at the Katrina Memorial on Biloxi Town Green. Its location is Highway 90 & Main Street across from the Hard Rock Casino. There are 21 stops on this walking tour. One of the stops on the tour, number 20, is pictured above. This is the Redding House located at 770 Jackson Street. This house is one of the finest Colonial Revival houses remaining in Biloxi. It was built for Charles Redding, a prominent businessman in Biloxi.

Take the Driving & Bicycling Tour of Historic Biloxi

Lighthouse Park Stop #29 on the trail

The driving & bicycling tour of historic Biloxi is divided into an east and west route. Both routes begin at the Biloxi Visitors Center located at 1050 Beach Blvd. Each will take approximately two hours to complete. Stop #29 on the west tour, pictured above, is the Biloxi Lighthouse Park. The park is located next to the Biloxi Visitor Center. Take a stroll around the boardwalk or have a picnic under the pavilion. There’s also a small children’s playground at the park. Spend the day discovering Biloxi’s history and all it has to offer.

Visit the Historic Old Biloxi Cemetery

Ancient oak trees stand guard over the Old Biloxi Cemetery

The grounds of the Old Biloxi Cemetery are covered with sprawling oak trees towering over the grave sites. The cemetery has many 19th century above-ground monuments and barrel-vaulted crypts. This type of interment is necessary due to the high water table in Biloxi.

Take the time to stole or drive through this historic cemetery to learn of the famous and not so famous people that are laid to rest here. This 300 year old cemetery is rich and diverse in history.

Hurricanes Camille and Katrina caused extensive damage to the area, some of which is still evident in the broken markers and tombs located throughout the cemetery. A restoration program is currently underway to repair the damage caused by recent hurricanes.

There’s the usual places to eat in Biloxi but then there’s a whole lot more to enjoy as well. Don’t forget about the casino restaurants and the fine dining they have to offer. Airport

Located in Gulfport, the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport serves the city of Biloxi. The airport is less than a 30 minute drive to Biloxi. Use either route US 90 E along the Gulf Coast or I-10 E to Biloxi.

Driving

US 90 (Beach Boulevard) is Biloxi’s main highway. It runs along the beach and by many of the casino resorts. Heading west, US 90 connects Biloxi to it’s neighboring city of Gulfport. While heading east on US 90 will take you to the cities of Ocean Springs and Pascagoula.

Interstate 10 runs through the northern sections of Biloxi and heading west 85 miles to New Orleans and east 60 miles to Mobile, Alabama.

Casino Hopper

A great way to see and enjoy the Gulf Coast is to hop aboard the Casino Hopper Bus. This scheduled bus travels a fixed route on US 90, Caillavet Blvd and Bayview Ave. on the Biloxi Loop. It is a comfortable way to ride to casinos, attractions and businesses. The Casino Hopper provides service 7-days a week, every 25 minutes.

Hours: Monday-Saturday 5:30am-9:20pm (last stop) and Sunday 8:30am-7:00pm. (last stop)
Admission charged: $1.50 per ride (no transfer privileges), $6.00 day pass for unlimited rides.

What to See & Do Near Biloxi?

Near Biloxi, in New Orleans you’ll find the French Quarter district. Celebrated for its world renowned restaurants, colorful nightlife and its historic buildings, it is rich in history and diverse in culture.

Domilise’s yummy shrimp & oyster Po-Boy sandwich

Be sure to stop by Cafe Du Monde, the original coffee stand since 1852, and enjoy a cup of dark roasted café au lait along with their famous beignets. Beignets are square French-style doughnuts that are generously sprinkled with powdered sugar, yum!

We drove to the famous Domilise’s Po-Boy and Bar to try their acclaimed po-boy sandwiches while we were in New Orleans. A po-boy sandwich is a traditional sandwich originating from New Orleans. It almost always consist of roast beef or seafood and is served on crusty French bread. Domilise’s is located at 5240 Annunciation St, New Orleans. We ordered the half & half oyster and shrimp sandwich. The sandwich was good, not too long of a wait but we thought too far to drive from the French Quarter for us to do again. Next time, we’ll try a po-boy sandwich in the French Quarter.

Distance from Biloxi: Taking I-10 West you will be in the French Quarter of New Orleans in about 1 hour and 25 minutes. The route is approximately 85 miles.

Gulf Island National Seashore Davis Bayou

We visited the Gulf Island National Seashore Davis Bayou location. It was one of the day trips we took during our 5 night stay in Biloxi. The park is part of the National Park Service and is located east of downtown Ocean Springs. Taking US Highway 90 from Biloxi the 10 mile route took us 20 minutes.

We found the park to be very scenic and a great place for hiking, biking, picnicking, boating, fishing and nature photography. Hiking the Davis Bayou Trail will take you through a coastal forest and over two local bayous. You may see an alligator or two while there. We spotted several turtles sunning themselves on a log but no alligators this time.

A boat launch and fishing pier are also available. A small 52 site campground is available year round and is located adjacent to a salt water marsh. The William M. Comer Visitor Center is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Have you ever stayed in a hotel where the walls were paper thin and you could hear banging around from other guests in the other rooms or upstairs? The next morning I woke up and thought to myself, maybe no one else stayed here last night…

Holiday Inn Express is a very big chain of hotels of something like 3,000 hotels.
This specific Holiday Inn & Suites is referred to as “Palatka Northwest” due to it’s location.

Holiday Inn Express & Suites – A Suite

The first thing that caught my attention was the floors and the colors. I thought the carpets looked really nice, and the colors all fit really well together. There was also white tile where I was standing that met with the carpet right at the bottom corner of the fridge. The bathroom was to my left and the white tile continued in there. There was also two shelves to the right that you can’t see in this photo. The suite had a fridge (that I opened, just to show), a microwave, a couple of sinks, a Keurig coffee maker with a couple of different types of coffee along with tea and plenty of cups.

The lights above and to the side of the bed were nice and easy to work with. The bed had four pillows. Two of the pillow cases were marked firm, and two were marked soft. They should have marked the bed “very comfortable”.

Floor level option

If you were curious, the white box on the wall with the wooden frame is the window. When I first checked in at the front desk, they asked me if I preferred to stay on a certain floor. I had the choice to say anything above the 1st floor but it didn’t matter to me at the time.

Right outside the window when I was taking these photos was a family in a van in the parking lot and I didn’t want to take photos of them, so I closed the cover on the window. If I had stayed a floor higher I would have left the window open to see a much better view. I guess this is also a good example on how well the window shades can be at providing privacy. If you would like a better view though, just ask for a higher level when checking in. There are many rooms here and they were also very friendly at the front desk.

Holiday Inn Express & Suites – Chair, Desk, & TV

The TV worked well along with everything else. The A/C was also easy to work with and did a fantastic job! It blew clean and cold air. There were options to keep the fan on, or turn the fan on only when needed. Everything in the room was great!

The room was quiet

The next morning after I woke up I realized that I hadn’t heard a single sound from anyone. At that time I wondered, did anyone else stay here last night? I went back to the cover that I closed on the window before and opened it. I was very surprised to see a parking lot that was packed. There wasn’t that many people in the parking lot when I arrived. There must have been many people that arrived later that night.

I walked out into the parking lot and took this photo. In the parking lot there were multiple trucks pulling ATVs, trucks with bass boats, other vehicles, and even a tour bus. Where did all of these people go? I didn’t hear anyone…

Maybe things change here depending on what’s going on or what rooms people stay in. I don’t know, but it was silent where I stayed. Maybe the Holiday Inn & Suites Palatka Northwest are doing a great job at spreading the people out in the hotel, or maybe the hotel was just built well. I don’t know, and I’m only able to tell you about my one night experience here. If you are looking for a quiet place to sleep, I think you will probably find that here.

A little more info

A couple of other things I didn’t mention, was that they do have a pool in the back, and they did have free breakfast in the morning. I noticed in the parking lot a couple of trucks taking up 5 parking spots, so it looked like they were pretty relaxed about that. The ATVs were probably heading to Hog Waller in the morning, and the bass boats were probably headed to the Saint Johns river where there is extremely good bass fishing. The Legacy Vacation Resorts is a 2 story condominium style resort located in Palm Coast, FL. All units include 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, fully equipped kitchen with washer and dryer. Situated amoung lush tropical landscape the resort offers a quiet and relaxing atmosphere as well as plenty of amenities to keep you entertained!

The Legacy Vacation Resorts 2 bedroom units sleep six. Each unit has two bedrooms and  two bathrooms with a pull out sofa bed in the living area. The kitchen is fully equip and spotlessly clean. We enjoyed cooking most of our meals in our condo or on the gas grill that’s located in a beautiful tropical setting complete with colorful and relaxing chairs.

Nicely decorated master bedroom with adjoining bathroom. The bathroom in the master bedroom has a huge tub with separate shower. And a very large double sink vanity area which I loved. For longer stays you will be happy to find that each unit at the Legacy Vacation Resorts contains a washer and dryer. It was supplied with laundry detergent for one load. Towels for the pool are provided for your convenience. Free parking and free WiFi are available for guest of the Legacy Restorts in Palm Coast, Florida.

Each unit at the Legacy Resort Palm Coast has a large screened in back porch which overlooks the beautifully maintained pool and grounds. You can see the screened in porch in the picture on the left. Bedroom 2 also has access to the same screened in back porch. We enjoyed our morning coffee and late afternoon cocktails there each day. The view here is just what we wanted for our relaxing vacation getaway!

The gas grill on site can be used by first going to the office to request that they light the grill for you. We did this one night and enjoyed a delicious steak dinner. There are also charcoal grills and picnic tables located throughout the property for guest to use.

Things to Do at the Legacy Palm Coast

The Legacy Vacation Resorts has a gorgeous, heated swimming pool with waterfalls and a hot tub that we always enjoy when we are vacationing here. You will find amenities such as fully equip fitness center, a 9-hole miniature golf course, tennis, ping pong, billiards, shuffle board and a children’s playground. Colorful chairs surround a fire pit near the gas grill area. We found this to be the perfect spot for relaxing, socializing and enjoying the beautiful tropical surroundings.

The Sea Aire Motel in Cocoa Beach, Florida made me feel at home, if only home had an oceanfront view!

I don’t know how they do it, but the Sea Aire Motel has some amazingly soft green grass! It’s actually worth mentioning because it makes walking around their property quite nice. Most motels don’t make walking out the front door this enjoyable on your feet, especially when you are at the beach. It’s hallways, then elevators, then lobbies, but here… soft green grass then sand and beach. I loved it! What a gem!

A little bit of history

The Sea Aire Motel has been here since 1950. The famous Mercury 7 Astronauts (the first 7 test pilots to become the first Astronauts in the USA) once stayed in this motel. Kelly Slater has also stayed at this motel in the late 90’s.

The Sea Aire Motel is located toward the center Cocoa Beach, Florida.

The room was clean and the beds were comfortable. When you open all of the blinds, there really was a lot of light that poured in. This is also something sort of unique. My room had more windows than a normal motel would have. I really liked that about my room. I’m not sure if they are all like this though. The rooms may be slightly different. But from what I noticed, everything pretty much looked similar. I think because my room was on the end of the row, it had more windows.

Make your way across the grass to the BBQ’s. I actually met a couple of people here that I made friends with. One of the employees later told me that it’s real common for people to make friends here and return year after year together.

They have plenty of benches under an overhang that make it easy for multiple small parties of people to sit and not feel like they are crowding anyone’s personal space. There are also a couple of benches in the sun, and a swing where you can sit back, relax, get sun and enjoy the ocean breeze.

If you’re looking for less people, book a room more towards the beginning of the week if you can. But even if there are too many people, which there was not for me, there’s a very big beach right in front of you. There are two entrances to the beach. You can’t see them here, but there’s one just to the right of the BBQ’s and one to the left right outside the gate. Also if you are planning on venturing out, I wrote a post on enjoyable things to do in Cocoa Beach, Florida. All of the things listed on that post are not far from this motel.

Here’s the beach access on the north side of the motel. I’ve written about Cocoa Beach, Florida, which also includes photos of the beach directly behind the Sea Aire Motel. The motel has recently been repainted and is now green. Also don’t forget that the Oceanview rooms are optional.
