Ravine Gardens State Park in Palatka, FL has azalea flowers, hiking trails and suspension bridges. With a combination of formal and natural gardens, this 146-acre park is a natural beauty. This was our first visit to Ravine Gardens State Park but it won’t be our last! We loved the winding pathways, steep stairways and suspension bridges found throughout the park. Some of the steep steps and pathways were a bit challenging but we really enjoyed the exercise.

We visited Ravine Gardens State Park in March while visiting the quaint town of Palatka, FL. It was the perfect time of year to see the azaleas in full bloom. Picnic tables with grills are available under a pavilion near the entrance of the park as well as throughout the gardens. The park is quiet, peaceful and great for photographers and bird watchers. Weddings, both indoor and outdoor, can be held at Ravine Gardens. What a beautiful setting this park would make for a wedding!

History of Ravine Gardens State Park

Ravine Gardens State Park is one of nine New Deal-era state parks in Florida. In January 1970, the Gardens were deeded to the Florida Internal Improvement Trust Fund and Ravine Gardens officially became a Florida State Park. In 1999, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The park is part of the Florida Azalea Festival, a two day event held on the first weekend in March of each year. The festival celebrates the arrival of the azalea flowers to the Palatka area.

At the bottom of the ravine are ponds, streams and ornamental plants, mainly azaleas that were planted during the development of the park back in 1933.

What to See and Do at Ravine Gardens State Park?

You’ll find plenty to see and do in Ravine Gardens State Park. There’s a spring-fed stream that runs along the bottom of the ravine. Children had fun playing in the water. Some had nets and were trying to catch the tiny fish in the water. Adults found walking in the stream fun too! And the park is a great place to take your dog for a walk.

Although known for its fabulous blooming azaleas, you’ll find the park is in bloom with beautiful flowers year round. There are 18 different species of azaleas growing in the park with the peak blooming time during February or March depending on the weather.

Miles of trails for hiking among the lovely gardens and 2 suspension bridges which span the ravines can be found throughout the park. A kids playground is also available in the park.

If the 2.5 mile Azalea Trail sounds like a bit too much, there’s also an easier trail you can walk along at the bottom of the ravine.

Explore the historic amphitheater found along one of the many trails. We didn’t have time to explore this trail but we have it on our list of things to do next time.

Park Drive Loop

A 1.8 mile loop drive through the park will take you to the top of the ravine and is available for cars, bikes and pedestrians. Drive the entire loop or you can park at designated areas for an overlook view or take the stairs down to the bottom of the ravine if you’d like. You’ll fine picnic tables as well as the children’s playground along this drive.

How Was The Ravine Created?

The ravine was created over thousands of years by erosion from natural springs that run through the park. The underground water from these springs bubbles up, cutting into the bank of the Whitewater Branch stream and carries sand and soil downstream into the St. Johns River.

Over thousands of years, the ravine have widened and deepened into the steep ravine you see today.

The Holiday Inn Express & Suites Palatka Northwest provided a quiet room that allowed me to get a good nights sleep.

Have you ever stayed in a hotel where the walls were paper thin and you could hear banging around from other guests in the other rooms or upstairs? The next morning I woke up and thought to myself, maybe no one else stayed here last night…

This specific Holiday Inn & Suites is referred to as “Palatka Northwest” due to it’s location.

Holiday Inn Express & Suites – A Suite

The first thing that caught my attention was the floors and the colors. I thought the carpets looked really nice, and the colors all fit really well together. There was also white tile where I was standing that met with the carpet right at the bottom corner of the fridge. The bathroom was to my left and the white tile continued in there. There was also two shelves to the right that you can’t see in this photo. The suite had a fridge (that I opened, just to show), a microwave, a couple of sinks, a Keurig coffee maker with a couple of different types of coffee along with tea and plenty of cups.

The lights above and to the side of the bed were nice and easy to work with. The bed had four pillows. Two of the pillow cases were marked firm, and two were marked soft. They should have marked the bed “very comfortable”.

Floor level option

If you were curious, the white box on the wall with the wooden frame is the window. When I first checked in at the front desk, they asked me if I preferred to stay on a certain floor. I had the choice to say anything above the 1st floor but it didn’t matter to me at the time.

Right outside the window when I was taking these photos was a family in a van in the parking lot and I didn’t want to take photos of them, so I closed the cover on the window. If I had stayed a floor higher I would have left the window open to see a much better view. I guess this is also a good example on how well the window shades can be at providing privacy. If you would like a better view though, just ask for a higher level when checking in. There are many rooms here and they were also very friendly at the front desk.

The TV worked well along with everything else. The A/C was also easy to work with and did a fantastic job! It blew clean and cold air. There were options to keep the fan on, or turn the fan on only when needed. Everything in the room was great!

The room was quiet

The next morning after I woke up I realized that I hadn’t heard a single sound from anyone. At that time I wondered, did anyone else stay here last night? I went back to the cover that I closed on the window before and opened it. I was very surprised to see a parking lot that was packed. There wasn’t that many people in the parking lot when I arrived. There must have been many people that arrived later that night.

I walked out into the parking lot and took this photo. In the parking lot there were multiple trucks pulling ATVs, trucks with bass boats, other vehicles, and even a tour bus. Where did all of these people go? I didn’t hear anyone…

Maybe things change here depending on what’s going on or what rooms people stay in. I don’t know, but it was silent where I stayed. Maybe the Holiday Inn & Suites Palatka Northwest are doing a great job at spreading the people out in the hotel, or maybe the hotel was just built well. I don’t know, and I’m only able to tell you about my one night experience here. If you are looking for a quiet place to sleep, I think you will probably find that here.

A little more info

A couple of other things I didn’t mention, was that they do have a pool in the back, and they did have free breakfast in the morning. I noticed in the parking lot a couple of trucks taking up 5 parking spots, so it looked like they were pretty relaxed about that. The ATVs were probably heading to Hog Waller in the morning, and the bass boats were probably headed to the Saint Johns river where there is extremely good bass fishing. Hog Waller in Palatka Florida is hard to beat if you are into exciting outdoor adventure and aren’t scared of getting dirty! Hog Waller has a very large mud pit and sits on over 1,000 acres with trails into Florida’s wild & untamed bad lands that seem to go on forever!

When you first arrive at Hog Waller in Palatka FL, you will see a couple of large entrance signs, and you will probably see campers and RVs. There is a small entrance fee at the gate and there’s a waiver they ask you to sign.

After entering the gate you are probably going to be looking for your spot to park or setup camp. There aren’t designated camping spots because where people park or camp is wide open space. It’s also first come first serve, so it’s best to get here earlier than later if you are camping. There are showers, restrooms, a place to eat, a gift shop, and even water hoses setup at a station to wash off your ATVs or UTVs.

Are there hotels near Hog Waller?

Yes, there are hotels near Hog Waller. I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites about 15 minutes up the road. The Holiday Inn’s reviews and rating were great, and I could see why. The room was very nice, it was quiet at night, and they had breakfast in the morning. I saw at least 3 trucks here pulling ATVs in the parking lot, along with multiple bass boats and even a tour bus.

Is there good bass fishing near Hog Waller?

I happened to run into professional bass fisherman Matt Arey from North Carolina in the parking lot of the Holiday Inn Express & Suites who was staying there too. He’s a very nice guy! He was entered into the Bassmaster tournament taking place nearby on the St. Johns river. Matt said there were some monster size bass in the St. Johns river and that the river was well known in the country for its great bass fishing! He mentioned that it has many great locations and many lakes that you can access.

A very short distance south on 19 from Hog Waller there’s a public boat ramp that will put you on the Ocklawaha River which connects to the Saint Johns River. Or, just a little further south you will find another boat ramp at Salt Springs. This is also available to the public, but there’s a small fee for parking. One of the pro’s fishing in the Bassmaster tournament caught a bass close to the boat ramp at Salt Springs. So if you are planning a trip to Hog Waller, and also like to fish for bass, you’ve come to the right place.

Only ATVs and UTVs are allowed on the 1,000 acres of trails at Hog Waller.

What is an ATV?

An ATV is an all-terrain vehicle, also known as a quad. It has a seat that is straddled and has handlebars. You can expect to see many ATVs having fun in the mud here at Hog Waller!

What is a UTV?

A utility task vehicle (UTV) also known as a side-by-side (SXS), is 4-wheeled and is meant for off-road use.

The big difference between a SXS and an all-terrain vehicle (or a quad) is that the passenger sits beside you instead of behind you. Both can be all wheel drive and both can go through the mud but the SXSs are often seen being able to carry 4 people instead of 2. Some of the SXSs also have more room in the back where you can keep things, like a cooler, generator, or maybe an extra gas can. The SXSs are the newest hottest thing right now, and they are very customized! If you hear music playing loud in these woods, it’s probably a SXS. They have cool lights, and sound systems, along with lift kits, upgraded tires, air intakes raised up high, and all sorts of accessories. They even had a sound competition for them that had a $2,000 payout!

If you look at that smaller Polaris, it’s got a full size Yeti cooler in the back, 4 JL audio speakers, 3 orange air intake snorkels behind the driver to prevent water from splashing up and getting into the motor, a windshield, a roof, and who knows how many more upgrades. Plus, it’s 1000cc and it’s light weight! They are really having fun with the SXSs out here at Hog Waller!

Can I bring my truck to Hog Waller?

If you’ve got a big truck, great! There’s a giant mud pit and depending on the day, they allow the trucks in there too!

Hog Waller’s own truck was picking up guests and taking them for a ride in the mud pit!

And then this guy entered the mud pit…

He would hit the mud and cause a huge splash. Some of this mud wasn’t thin, but it was thick. His truck would push through the mud with a great sounding roaring motor. He had his radiator mounted in the bed of the truck. When mud splashed over the roof, it would land on the radiator and cause the steam.

After you have gotten situated, maybe even been entertained by trucks, it’s time to do what you came for… ENTER THE 1000 ACRE WOODS!

But wait, what if you don’t own an ATV or a UTV? Not a problem!

Hog Waller has rentals.

Hog Waller offers SXS rentals, that seat 4 people! Take a day or two off to explore the deep woods of Florida.

This very nice group of people were out on the trails having a great time on one of Hog Waller’s Honda Pioneer 700 rentals. If you are interested in exploring Hog Waller’s 1000 acres woods but you don’t have an ATV or SXS yet, this is a perfect way to have fun outdoors in a quality ride with a whole lot less cost then purchasing one.

But they are a busy location and the rentals are limited. I know that while I was there, they were sold out, so I suggest to contact them in advance.

Night falls at Hog Waller in Palatka, FL

After a long day of riding, make it back toward the camping area and stop by the Hog Trough to get something good to eat. They have a lot on the menu, but I had a cheeseburger, fries and onion rings with a bottled water and it was all great! The Hog Trough is under a very beautiful canopy of Florida oak trees with lights hanging in the trees. There are many benches for you to sit at and enjoy your food. Right beside the Hog Trough there is a gift shop that you could pick up a souvenir while you are waiting for your food to be prepared.

Out in the swampy area at night you can see all the lights of SXSs and ATVs at Hog Waller.

This area had pretty deep water and it looked like they were all debating. A guy got stuck, but the people nearby would help. I found that this was the same everywhere in the park. I think helping someone get out of the mud is just as much fun for a lot of people out here.

February seems to be the best month for whale sightings, but whales are present and spotted from December to March each year. Bird watchers will also enjoy the many species of shore birds that frequent this area.

Washington Oaks Gardens State Park is definitely worth visiting and is on our list of places we would like to return to. Named a Florida State Parks “National Gold Medal Winner” it is America’s first two-time winner!

Once a plantation dating to the early 1800s it was previously owned by a distant relative of President George Washington. The park is divided into two separate sections: a lush historic gardens on the west side of State Road A1A and a beach shoreline on the east Atlantic Ocean side of State Road A1A. The beach is located across the street from the gardens. The shoreline here is lined with fascinating coquina rock formations. We found Washington Oaks Gardens Park to be exceptionally beautiful.

The Nights of Lights in St Augustine FL is always a romatic vacation time but this year it was especially romantic. As we strolled around the historic district admiring the thousands of tiny white lights we happen to witness a newly wed couple. They were in the Plaza de la Constitucion in their wedding attire having their formal pictures taken!

Needless to say the couple stole the show as everyone was eager to watch and congratulate them. St Augustine is a very popular choice for destination weddings, especially during the fabulous Nights of Lights. We wish them many years of happiness together. The Nights of Lights is an annual event which usually runs from the weekend before Thanksgiving to the last day in January. See it if you can!

The historic district in St Augustine during the Nights of Lights was as spectacular as ever! We make the Nights of Lights St Augustine an annual visit. So this year was no exception and I’m glad we went.

We couldn’t resist entering the lobby of the beautiful and historic Casa Monica Hotel that we have previously stayed to check out their holiday decorations. The Casa Monica Hotel was decorated beautifully inside and out. This is a picture of one of the Christmas Trees in the hotel lobby that I just loved.

We walked around the Plazs de la Constitucion and down a few of the side streets as well to admire the holiday decorations in the shop windows and the brightly decorated buildings. The Lightner Museum in the picture above along with the other historic buildings in the square were all decorated in tiny white lights! View From the Bridge of Lions

We took a walk over the Bridge of Lions and the scene was almost magical as we looked back at the St Augustine historic district. It was aglow with thousands of tiny lights. Boat tours along the river are also a popular activity especially during the Night of Lights.

Old Salt Park Palm Coast, Florida is a beachfront park within the Ocean Hammock Resort. It was a delightful find for us! While vacationing in Palm Coast we went exploring for a beach where we could relax, soak in the Florida sunshine and try our hand at surf fishing in the Atlantic waters. We found Old Salt Park Palm Coast easily did all of the above.

We found the beach here to be so peaceful that we took our time and walked along the shore to search for seashells. I found a couple of keepers but there really aren’t many shells that wash ashore here. Maybe after a strom comes through you’d have more luck though. The sand here is beautiful and after our walk we enjoyed just relaxing and fishing for a while. The sound of the surf alone has a way of soothing me into peaceful relaxation.

Where is Old Salt Park in Palm Coast Located?

Old Salt Park is located within the lush grounds of the Ocean Hammock Resort. We enjoyed relaxing on the beach and surf fishing here in the gorgeous Atlantic Ocean. Old Salt Park beach is 3.7 miles, about a 7 minute drive from the Legacy Vacation Resorts in Palm Coast where we were vacationing. When leaving the Legacy Vacation Resorts come to the 4 way stop. At the 4 way stop turn left onto Palm Harbor Pkwy. At the first stop turn right onto Hammock Dunes Pkwy (toll bridge). At the end of the Pkwy continue across the street to the entrance of Hammock Dunes. You will continue driving through Hammock Dunes on the Hammock Dunes Pkwy following the signs that say “BEACH”. Make a right at 16th Road East which will take you directly to the parking area. Enjoy!

What to do at Old Salt Park in Palm Coast?

The coast at Old Salt Park is beautiful! You will find fishing, sunbathing, picnicking, and whale watching to be popular activities here. February seems to be the best month for whale sightings, but whales are present and spotted from December to March each year. Dolphins are commonly spotted playing in the wake of passing boats and bird watchers will enjoy the many species of shore birds that frequent this area.

Try your hand at surf fishing along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean! Grab a pole, some bait and tackle and see what’s biting. Mullet and shrimp as well as similar artificial lures will work well as bait. Some of the more prominent fish caught in the area are Redfish, Spotted Seatrout, Drum and Sheepshead. Bluefish and Pompano are also being caught. Remember: a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work! Good luck and have fun.

The formal gardens side offers visitors a peaceful stroll through winding trails. You will be walking within a scenic oak hammock with reflecting ponds, gazebos and fragrant rose gardens. Named a Florida State Parks “National Gold Medal Winner” it is America’s first two-time winner!

What is Washington Oaks Gardens State Park?

Washington Oaks Gardens State Park is a Florida State Park with formal gardens on one side and a beach shoreline of coquina rock formations on the Atlantic Ocean side of the park. Situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Matanzes River, the property was once owned by a distant relative of President George Washington.

What to Do at Washington Oaks Gardens State Park

You’ll find restful benches at the reflecting ponds and throughout the park. Pathways winding around the marsh and hammock of Washington Gardens Park will lead you to the formal gardens, rose gardens and along several reflecting ponds. Picknicking and fishing are poplular activities here. A picnic area is located in the shady hammock area at the south side of the gardens. Along the seawall in the park you will find fishing areas provided just west of the picnic area along the Matanzas Rivier. There is also a gift shop here. One hundred percent of all proceeds from the gift shop stay in the park to maintain the beauty of the park.

As you stroll through the formal gardens, oak hammock and reflecting ponds surrounding you at Washington Oaks Gardens State Park you will find yourself amazed at how beautiful and well maintained the gardens are. Some of the trees in the park are massive.

Take time to sit and reflect on the natural beauty surrounding you. I can’t think of a better way to spend an afternoon can you?

Kids enjoyed face painting, balloon twisting, train rides and more while the music of a live band entertained the adults. Several other activities were also planned for those visiting the Village during this time.

Best Time to Visit European Village at Palm Coast

Anytime of the year is a good time to visit the Village but we thought it was especially nice to stroll around the plaza during the holidays. Because we felt the colorful lights, festive decorations and some added entertainment made it even more fun. Weekends seem to be more popular at the European Village but we were there during the holidays on a weekday and it was still pretty lively.

What is the Legacy Vacation Resorts Palm Coast, Florida?

The Legacy Vacation Resorts is a 2 story condominium style resort located in Palm Coast, FL. All units include 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, fully equipped kitchen with washer and dryer. Situated amoung lush tropical landscape the resort offers a quiet and relaxing atmosphere as well as plenty of amenities to keep you entertained!

The Legacy Vacation Resorts 2 bedroom units sleep six. Each unit has two bedrooms and  two bathrooms with a pull out sofa bed in the living area. The kitchen is fully equip and spotlessly clean. We enjoyed cooking most of our meals in our condo or on the gas grill that’s located in a beautiful tropical setting complete with colorful and relaxing chairs.

Nicely decorated master bedroom with adjoining bathroom. The bathroom in the master bedroom has a huge tub with separate shower. And a very large double sink vanity area which I loved. For longer stays you will be happy to find that each unit at the Legacy Vacation Resorts contains a washer and dryer. It was supplied with laundry detergent for one load. Towels for the pool are provided for your convenience. Free parking and free WiFi are available for guest of the Legacy Restorts in Palm Coast, Florida.

Each unit at the Legacy Resort Palm Coast has a large screened in back porch which overlooks the beautifully maintained pool and grounds. You can see the screened in porch in the picture on the left. Bedroom 2 also has access to the same screened in back porch. We enjoyed our morning coffee and late afternoon cocktails there each day. The view here is just what we wanted for our relaxing vacation getaway!

The gas grill on site can be used by first going to the office to request that they light the grill for you. We did this one night and enjoyed a delicious steak dinner. There are also charcoal grills and picnic tables located throughout the property for guest to use.

Things to Do at the Legacy Palm Coast

The Legacy Vacation Resorts has a gorgeous, heated swimming pool with waterfalls and a hot tub that we always enjoy when we are vacationing here. You will find amenities such as fully equip fitness center, a 9-hole miniature golf course, tennis, ping pong, billiards, shuffle board and a children’s playground. Colorful chairs surround a fire pit near the gas grill area. We found this to be the perfect spot for relaxing, socializing and enjoying the beautiful tropical surroundings.
